Like most of the Ba'ku, Anij ages extremely slowly thanks to the unique properties of her home planet's ring system. She was subjected to a covert observation program by the Federation and Son'a, but this was revealed thanks to interference by Lieutenant Commander Data when he found that the actual purpose of the mission was to transplant the Ba'ku to another planet without their knowledge so that the rings could be harnessed by the two powers. Anij had the ability to alter her perception of the flow of time to a great degree, and could even include others in this illusion. She became romantically involved with Captain Picard when he visited the planet and put a stop to the project to relocate her people. [1]
