Areel was the starfleet prosecutor who attempted to convict Captain Kirk following the apparent death of Ben Finney through culpable negligence. Although she had a prior romantic involvement with Kirk, she was determined to do whatever was necessary to prove his guilt. She failed when it transpired that Finney was in fact alive. [1]
