Jake was a student aboard the Enterprise-D in 2364, and aspired to join Starfleet himself. His test scores were insufficient to allow him to apply, and so he stole a shuttlecraft and tried to flee the ship. Jake unbalanced the engine and almost crashed the shuttle, but was saved by Captain Picard. [1]
