Coronal Mass Ejection

NotesImages
Universe : Prime Timeline
Name : Coronal Mass Ejection

A coronal mass ejection is a natural process in a stars life cycle when it will cast off part of its corona in the solar winds. CME's, as they are sometimes abbreviated, are similar to but no the same as solar flairs, although the two phenomenon often happen at the same time. [1]

In 2269, the USS Stardiver observed an unusual series of coronal mass ejections from Shangdi, a red supergiant they were studying. Very soon after they were attacked by the Gorn and the ship destroyed. Only Lieutenant Scott was able to escape in a shuttle. He was also able to hide himself from the Gorn. Based on Scott's account, Lieutenant Sam Kirk hypothesized that the light from the CMEs may have triggered the Gorn's aggressive actions. [1]

Further study of Gorn activity, by Commander Una Chin-Riley and Ensign Nyota Uhura lead to a theory that not only did certain types of coronal mass ejections cause Gorn aggression but other forms, typical X class types, caused the Gorn to go into extended periods of hybernation. This theory was provided shortly afterwards when the USS Enterprise simulated a X-class ejection in the Gorn home system leading to their armada returning to the system and staying for an extended period of time. [2]
